Fire and evacuation modelling

We perform fire spread modelling, evacuation time analysis and other specialised calculations to optimise design solutions.

Overview

Computer modelling of smoke movement and evacuation time is the most advanced tool in fire safety engineering. Using industry-leading software such as PyroSim and Pathfinder, it allows us to create an accurate 3D digital twin of the building and simulate real-world fire scenarios virtually, before construction or reconstruction begins.

The core safety criterion: a building is considered safe when the evacuation time (RSET) is shorter than the time in which the fire becomes life-threatening (ASET), factoring in the mandatory safety margin.

Scope

How does it work?

  • ASET (Available Safe Egress Time) — fire and smoke dynamics modellingUsing the industry-standard FDS (fire dynamics simulator) via PyroSim, we calculate how long it takes for smoke, heat and toxic substances from the fire source to reach a critical, life-threatening level. The simulation demonstrates the real-time smoke movement, temperature changes and loss of visibility in specific spaces of the building.
  • RSET (Required Safe Egress Time) — evacuation modellingUsing Pathfinder software, we simulate the behaviour of virtual occupants during a fire. The system factors in occupant load, the number of people, their walking speeds, physical characteristics, reaction time and potential bottlenecks at doors or stairwells. This allows us to determine the time required for everyone to leave the building safely.
Why us

When is this modelling necessary and useful?

  1. 01With architectural constraintsWhere evacuation routes cannot be widened, or additional stairwells and fire exits cannot be installed in reconstructed or heritage buildings.
  2. 02In large-scale or complex buildingsShopping centres, factories, logistics warehouses or sports arenas, where the prescriptive fire safety regulations do not fully account for the unique characteristics and scale of the spaces.
  3. 03For enclosed parking garagesIt allows for the precise design of efficient smoke control (JetFan) systems, preventing over-engineering and optimizing equipment costs.
